Treatment: Detox, IOP, Counseling and Aftercare

If you’re ready to enter treatment, congratulations – and welcome!

Now what?

You know you need help, but you may not know what to expect.  You may not know what level of care you need, or how much of a commitment you’re ready to make. Or you may have been through this before, and know pretty well what you have to do. But no one can do it alone.

When you call our office, you’ll talk to a professional who cares. Our admissions team has been where you’re at, and they’ve found a new way to live. From that first call, you won’t be alone. One of us will be available to walk you all the way through the process.

We’ll talk with you about your decision to seek treatment, the substances you’re using, and how long you’ve been struggling. We’ll help you consider your options and determine the best and safest way to proceed.

Phase One – Detox

Depending on your medical history, how much and how long you’ve used – and what you’re using right now – inpatient detox might be a good idea, or you might detox at home with support and supervision. Either way, we’re here to help with medically supervised, clinically supported detoxification.

Phase Two – Addiction Treatment

Once your head is clear, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) will offer structured support and tools. You’ll start working one-on-one with a therapist who can help you get to the root causes of your addiction and develop skills to prevent relapse. And you will be introduced to 12-Step fellowships and other groups, so you can find the recovery community that’s right for you. Social support is an essential ingredient for long-term recovery, and finding places where we identify and feel supported is essential.

Phase Three – Aftercare

As IOP is completed, aftercare planning begins. Many people enjoy our aftercare group, and together with ongoing therapy aftercare helps you learn to apply the tools you’ve learned so you can remain abstinent even as life happens. 12-Step or other outside community engagement is a vital component in ongoing recovery. For many people, sober living arrangements can allow a fresh start in a safe and structured environment.

We’re here to help you through every step of the process

If it’s time to make a change, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are happy to answer questions, tell you more about our programs – or just listen.
There is hope. Let us help.

Drug and Alcohol Detox

If necessary, the first step is detoxification. We offer medically supervised detox through our outpatient programs for drugs and alcohol.  During your initial appointment, we will discuss what type of detox steps are right for you. Medical complications, length of use, and frequency of use are all factors that will be considered by our specialists.

Alcohol Detox

Chronic, excessive drinking can lead to physiological tolerance and dependence on alcohol. When this dependency exists, a person will need medically supervised detoxification to safely stop drinking or serious and even life-threatening conditions can occur. Seizures, delirium tremens (DTs), or death are all possible if alcohol withdrawal is not medically managed.

Detoxing from Alcohol – Withdrawal Symptoms

The abrupt cessation of alcohol can precipitate serious and sometimes dangerous withdrawal symptoms.  Because your body has become dependent on these substances to function, in their absence it lacks the ability to function normally, In time your body will adjust, the withdrawal symptoms will abate, and the body will return to normal.

Unfortunately, people who are suffering from alcohol addiction often do not realize just how strong their bodies and minds have become dependent until they attempt to cut back or quit drinking. There is another way to end the destructive hold of alcohol and start anew.

Detoxification is the process of safely withdrawing your body from a substance with the aid of medications and other techniques that lessen the uncomfortable symptoms and reduce cravings.

After a successful detox, a client can move towards maintaining long-term sobriety and recovery through continued treatment in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). After a short-term detox, we recommend Vivitrol for many of our clients. Vivitrol is an extremely effective medication that lasts for 28 days and helps block further cravings for alcohol.

You may be wondering if you need detox? Before you decide you can stop on your own, call to schedule an assessment with us and a medical professional will determine a safe and effective detox plan for you. Our innovative detox protocols for both alcohol and drug addiction minimize the discomfort of withdrawal, reduce cravings, and help prevent relapse.

Outpatient Detox for Alcohol

Many clients need medically supervised detox services but are unwilling or unable to enter into residential care due to work or family obligations. Turning Point Recovery’s Outpatient Detox program allows clients to detox comfortably at home. Clients receive medication to alleviate withdrawal symptoms of alcohol and regular medical oversight to ensure that their detox is as comfortable and safe as possible.

After an initial medical assessment, clients are presented with a detox protocol specific to their individual situation. Clients check in with our medical staff daily to ensure that their alcohol detox is progressing smoothly and to have any questions they may have answered. A typical alcohol detox period lasts 3 – 5 days depending on each client’s amount and frequency of use.

Once detox is complete, clients are able to continue their recovery as part of our Intensive Outpatient Program.

Detox from Drugs including Alcohol

Imagine you have the worst flu, and the worst panic attack – at the same time. That’s kind of what acute withdrawal feels like. Those who have experienced this without medication, support or safety may be so afraid of that feeling that they will continue to use – no matter the consequences.

There used to be a belief that hard withdrawal served as a deterrent to using again, but it doesn’t work that way. It can be painful and even dangerous to abruptly stop using – especially opioids, benzodiazapenes, and alcohol. If your addiction has reached the point where you feel sick when you don’t get your stuff, you probably need help to get free. That’s where we come in.

At Turning Point, we don’t believe that getting clean needs to be a punishing experience. Medically supervised detox can make the process of getting clean easier and safer. We help people get clean as safely and comfortably as possible. Our intake specialists can help you decide what detox is right for you.

After successful detoxification, clients can continue their recovery through our Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) at Turning Point.

Outpatient Detoxification for Opiates

Sometimes, people need medically supervised detox services but are unable to enter into residential care. Turning Point Recovery’s Outpatient Detox program allows clients to detox at home. Clients receive medication to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and regular medical oversight to ensure that their detox is as comfortable and safe as possible.

After an initial medical assessment, we create a detox protocol specific to each client. Clients check in with our medical staff daily to ensure that their detox is progressing smoothly. You can talk with our caring staff and peer workers; we’ll answer questions and support you through the process. A typical opioid detox period lasts between 5 – 7 days, depending on how much and how often you’ve been using.

Once detox is complete, clients are able to continue their recovery as part of our Intensive Outpatient Program.

Vivitrol

After detox, we recommend Vivitrol for many of our clients. Vivitrol is an extremely effective medication that helps block cravings for opioids and alcohol. Vivitrol (Naltrexone) is a non-addictive, long-acting, injectable medication that has been shown to reduce the chances of relapse when coupled with ongoing treatment.

Detoxing From Opioids – Withdrawal Symptoms

Opioids in any form are effective at relieving pain in the short term, but over time they make the body unable to address pain on its own. It’s not just that they stop working – they actually make the problem worse, especially for people with chronic pain. Our medically approved detox protocol is designed to lessen the pain associated with opioid withdrawal and to help your body learn to regulate again.
Symptoms of withdrawal may include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle aches
  • Insomnia
  • Runny nose and eyes
  • Sweating
  • Yawning
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Dilated pupils
  • Goosebumps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Intensive Outpatient Program

Few of us can put our life on hold while recovering from addiction. The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Turning Point Recovery provides safe, effective, comprehensive drug and alcohol treatment scheduled so as not to interfere with your career, family responsibilities, and important life commitments. Our IOP utilizes both group and individual counseling helping clients establish and maintain recovery from addictions. Our multi-dimensional program also teaches 12-step principles and addresses our client’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Clients learn practical recovery skills that can be implemented in their lives immediately.

Our IOP provides the education, support, and accountability necessary to sustain meaningful long-lasting recovery. Our clients are able to remain in their home environment and continue with work, school, or family obligations while practicing new recovery behaviors in a familiar context.

Turning Point Recovery is pleased to receive Behavioral Health Care Accreditation from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation.

Compliance with behavioral health care standards related to several areas including care, treatment, services, the environment of care, leadership, and screening procedures were all rigorously evaluated on site. Our staff continues to work together to develop and implement approaches and strategies that have the potential to improve care for those we serve.

Relapse Prevention

Vivitrol is a monthly injection that dramatically reduces cravings for opioids and alcohol. It is not a substitute for treatment, but it sure helps to support people in the early stages of recovery. By diminishing the obsession in the early, intense months of abstinence, clients have the chance to build a foundation for recovery without having to “white knuckle” their way in.

In contrast to suboxone or methadone, Vivitrol is not an opioid. Vivitrol works by blocking certain receptors in your brain. It has been demonstrated to reduce cravings for opiates and for alcohol after detox, and gives you a fighting chance. It’s not for everybody – if you’re still using, or if you’ve sustained severe liver damage, it might not be a good idea. But for many people who are starting out or starting over, Vivitrol can be a game-changer.

Turning Point is the largest private prescriber of Vivitrol in New Mexico. We find that the reduction in cravings and symptoms means that our clients are able to participate in counseling, in group, in meetings and in their lives – without the obsession and compulsion that makes early recovery so difficult and dangerous.

We don’t believe that recovery has to be painful to work. We also don’t think it should take forever. Treatment with Vivitrol for the first few months of recovery allows you to get started – and get free.

Chronic pain can be serious, debilitating — and depressing. It can also be very challenging to treat. Tolerance escalates, effectiveness diminishes, and people prescribed opioids to address their pain often find that their use spirals out of control as relief becomes harder and harder to come by.

We are sensitive to the challenges and barriers to treatment that chronic pain can create. Using a wide range of modalities to treat and manage pain, we help clients find greater comfort and control over symptoms and freedom from medications that may be creating their own problems. We can work with your primary care doctor and pain specialists to develop a coordinated plan of care and recovery. Even for those of us who struggle with physical illness or injury — recovery is possible.
